Bad, Jeri! However, I didn't want to go through the whole month of July without completing one task, so yesterday I thawed out some frozen bread dough balls, the kind you make rolls with, and I fried them up, just like my Granny used to. I was in such a hurry to eat them that I forgot to take pictures. So I did it again this morning only this time I used the canned refrigerator rolls. They were good too. I made sure I took pictures this time, but Blogger doesn't want to play nice today and it won't let me upload the picture. : ( Oh well, take my word for it, they were delicious.

#84 Try 10 Different Kinds of Beer or Malt Beverages - Done!

20 Down
81 To Go

Whew! I've been working on a screenplay and haven't posted for a while, but I'm still alive and still plugging away on my tasks. I'll give you an update in a couple of days.

I bought this kite a couple of weeks ago. Pretty, ain't she? Walmart, $10. She's a two fister (see the two strings?) with a 60 inch wing span. We tried to fly it soon after I bought it, but quickly realized that she's pretty heavy and needs a lot of wind for lift. Saturday the wind was blowing pretty good so we tried again.

Boy did we have wind! And boy did she have lift! I'm not sure if I was controlling the kite of the kite controlling me. I got her up in the air onece and I had to lean waaay back to keep from getting pulled forward. Suddenly, she lost lift. Yep, you guessed it. Sprawled out in the grass, head over heals, getting ate alive by the chiggers. Needless to say, my family thought it was hilarious.

Hubby was having a hard time controlling how much string came off the little controllers, so he decided to wrap the string around his fingers. Ouch! You don't want to do that! The kite got lift and tried to cut the ends of his fingers off. No blood, but a couple of nice string burns for his effort.

My youngest son had the best luck. He got it flying on his first try and kept it up longer than anyone. He even had it up long enough for me to take a few pictures, for your viewing pleasure. Beginner's luck! He learned how to do it by watching us. That's my story anyway.

We had never tried to fly a kite with two strings before so it took a little getting used to. (Hint: If it rolls left, pull right) Once we figured that out we could keep it flying for a while, but once the strings got twisted, we were screwed. Armed with this new knowlege, and new cockiness, we decided to take it to the top of the hill where there was ever more wind. Wow! Hubby was flying, I was launching. I tossed it up in the air and it took off and immediately started doing wild erratic dives and loops... in my direction!. It sounded like a Cessna coming at me! It didn't take me long to learn the fine art of toss and RUN!

But alas, the wind at the top of the hill proved stronger than the kite string. Sigh. The string broke three times and we finally called it quits. But we had a good time playing with it. She was worth every bit of $10, and with some new string she'll be ready to fly again.

Hey. Go fly a kite! You'll like it, trust me.

Hmm, Not Working as Planned

I cut out TV for the month of May hoping for a few more hours of productivity each day. NOPE! I'm too tired to be creative so writing is out. I fall asleep if I try to read after 8pm, so catching up on a few screenplays is out. I thought it would be a good time to really hit my drawing tasks, but that's not happening either. After dinner, I loaf around for a while, get bored and go to bed. Years and years of vegging out after 8pm has created a biological monster. What is it they say? You can lead a body away from the TV, but you can't make it think. Or something like that. Dang, old habits die hard!

# 80 Eat at a Greek Restaurant - Complete!

16 Down
85 To Go

...Gyros,
the
Mad Greek,
Maussaka...

Mom and I went out for lunch today and ate at The Mad Greek restaurant. But to help out, I decided to complete #99 - Go one month without watching TV.

Now, that task is impossible to do 100%. I live with three other people and the TV is on every night. It's on while I cook dinner, it's on while we eat, it's on until we all go to bed. I won't ask everyone else to turn it off, but the two, or three, or four hours between dinner and bed that I usually spend vegging out in front of the tube will be spent doing something a little more productive. That works out to be between 60 and 120 extra hours of productivity for the month of May. I can live with that. So I transfered my Netflix selections over to hubby, cleaned up my work space in the bedroom, cracked my knuckles, clicked my heels three times and now I'm ready for a month of writing.

The First Draft is Shit!

I got a wild hair and started a new screenwriting blog, The First Draft is Shit. It was created for all things having to do with screenwriting. I moved the progress bars over to the new site also so you can still track my progress, or lack of, whichever the case my be. This time I decided to put a little extra pressure on myself. Did I just say that? Christ! What is wrong with me?

Anyway, I've seen these little progress bars in the sidebars of some blogs that I've visited and thought they were cool so I did a Google search and found this site that showed me how to make them. (Thank you... I think) So, now you can track the progress of my latest screenwriting adventure.

Nothing like the feeling of being watched to keep you moving in a forward motion. I can't believe I'm doing this to myself. As if trying to write eight screenplays in 1001 days isn't enough, now I invite people to track my progress??? I made tacos and sopapillas last night for dinner. I got the grease for the sopapillas too hot and tried to burn my house down. Just kidding. No fire just a lot of smoke. I'm glad we have an attic fan. Once I got the grease thing figured out, they made a real tasty treat. I haven't made them in years. I don't know why, I love these things.

I remember the first time I had sopapillas. I think the restaurant was called Casa Bonita, in Denver, Colorado back in 19... Never mind, we won't go there. But it was a very cool place. Part restaurant, part carnival or something, very entertaining. Anyone else remember that?

Here's a link to a Sopapilla recipe if you're interested. We still haven't tried a Martini.

Tweeking My List Again

4 tasks needed to be changed.

#16 I didn't like the online part of the online drawing classes so:
Old - Complete Wetcanvas Basic 101 Online Drawing Classes
New - Work through How To Draw What You See and Keys to Drawing
Note: How to Draw What You See is the book the online classes use, I just prefer the book form it's more mobile.

#17 I found a perspective book that has more actual lessons so:
Old - Work through Perspective Made Easy
New - Work through Perspective Without Pain

#18 I chose the first figure drawing book because it is smaller and I thought I could work through it quicker, but I simply like the second book better. The second book is twice the size but I think I will learn more as a result, so:
Old - Work through Famous Artist's School: How to draw the Human Figure
New - Work through Figure Drawing for All it's Worth

and #70 was not measurable so I made it more specific.
Old - Start a CD collection of my favorite music. (One CD is a start, but where's the fun in that?)
New - Add at least 10 CDs to my music collection

#30 Take 25 photos in Black and White - Done!

12 Down
89 to go

I only needed a few more black and white photos to complete this task so I went ahead and knocked them out and checked off one more task today.

See the photos here.

#1 Write 1st screenplay for 2006 - DONE!

11 Down
90 To Go

Whew! I Finally finished the first screenplay for 2006. Actually, One Week is a script I wrote in 2005. I edited it and rewrote it in 2006. But since I spent more time rewriting this one then I did writing it in the first place, I'm counting it as a completed task.

Rewriting SUCKS! Hopefully, the more scripts I write, the better I will get at planning the story elements before I start writing, and identifying trouble spots after the first draft is completed. Less time spent rewriting, means more time for writing. That's where the fun lies.

Rewriting One Week was the reason I went back to the drawing board, reviewed my old screenwriting books and eventually wrote Writing with POWER. I got stuck in the rewrite and didn't know what to do with it. I liked the story, believed I had a good idea for a script, but it just needed some tweeking and I didn't know what to tweek and how to tweek it. This was a clue that I didn't understand storytelling as well as I thought. Writing is easy. Knowing how to fix what needs fixing is the hard part. For me, anyway. One Week even forced me to go back and REWRITE part of Writing with POWER. The first draft proved to be less helpful than I had hoped. But after more thought, things began to click and the story problems suddenly became clear. I'm happier with the story now and think I learned a lot from this rewrite experience.

I'm thrilled that I finished this script before the end of April. It gives me a couple of weeks to cleanse the pallet before I get busy writing the next script. It also gives me time to work on some other tasks that I want to start or finish before the end of the month.

Stay tuned for what I hope will be a task thrashing couple of weeks.

New Trick

...this is
what a pullquote looks like on the right-hand side...

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? But when I wrote them all down, there were only about 30 movies that I hadn't seen yet.

I'm happy to say that there were a few surprises left. Passion Fish, Il Postino and Billy Elliot were among my favorites. Deconstructing Harry was surprisingly good as well. I say surprisingly because I'm normally not a big Woody Allen fan, but that one was pretty good. I hear Matchpoint is his best work yet. I guess I'll find out. And I'm glad I gave Moulin Rouge another look. The first time I saw it, I started in the middle and gave up within a few minutes. The "Silly Love Songs" make more sense when you start at the beginning and know what's going on.

#96 Do Spring Cleaning on the Computer - Done!

9 Down
Only 92 To Go

Today, I spent the entire day cleaning up my computer.
I deleted a a couple of programs that we no longer use,
Cleaned up My Documents and got rid of a bunch of files left over from home schooling,
Cleaned up the Shared Files,
Cleaned up the Desktop,
Cleaned and sorted my Email and Bookmarks,
Ran Scandisk,
Ran Defrag,
Then I bought and downloaded a program called Registry Mechanic. Yeah!

Not a bad days work, but now I reeeally need to stretch.

#29 26 Things - Done!

8 Down
93 To Go

Okay, I couldn't stand it. I created my Photosite and I had to put something new in it, so I completed the 26 Things Photography Scavenger Hunt.

It was fun and challenging. It forced me the think outside the box and helped get the creative juices flowing. The longer I thought about each word, the more ideas I came up with. I took pictures of things I wouldn't normally take pictures of. It was a great little exercise.

See it at my PhotoSite.

A couple of new things

First of all, Mom put her pictures on PhotoSite.com and I really liked the way it looked, so I checked into it a little closer this weekend. Wow. I like it a lot better than Flickr. Probably the same learning curve, but a better look for your efforts. PhotoSite has more variety, more control, more organizational choices. Another plus with PhotoSite, is that most of my photography projects are for 25 photos and I imagined them in a 5 X 5 layout. I couldn't find that I had a 5 X 5 option in Flickr, or could even choose the layout for that matter. Flickr is great if you want to share your pictures with the world and be a part of a very large photo community, but I just want to share photos with family and friends and I think PhotoSite is better suited for my needs. Thanks Mom.

See my new PhotoSite at http://carpediem.photosite.com. It's pretty weak right now, not very many pictures, but I think you can see the potential. I like that you can create albums then create chapters within the albums. I'm not sure I'll keep it that way but its a nice option to have.

Secondly, I emailed Michael Green at Triplux and asked that my blog be added to his 101 in 1001 list. Yeah!!! I'm on the list. I think the 101 list is a great motivational tool and I've gotten a lot of inspiration from looking at other 101 lists and reading about their progress. I want to help spread the joy, if I can.

See it at http://www.triplux.com/1001/otherlists.asp. Jeri's 101 in 1001 is waaaay at the bottom.

#74 Try Ten Different Coffees - Done!

7 Down
94 To Go

This Cafe Vienna marks the tenth coffee and the seventh task completed.

You can see all ten on My Food and Drinks page.

Writing with POWER

This is the cover of my screenwriting booklet, Writing with POWER.

I started writing it when Mom and I went to Memphis. It kept me busy during the day while she was in class. I continued working on it when we came home and I finally finished it this morning.

While I was homeschooling the boys, I found a writing curriculum that taught students to TOWER their writing. Think, Outline, Write, Edit, Rewrite. I loved the acronym and adapted it a bit for my screenwriting booklet.

The 38 page booklet is a glorified version of notes taken from my favorite screenwriting, or fiction writing, books and is organized into 4 chapters.

Chapter 1 - Ponder your Story
Chapter 2 - Organize your Story
Chapter 3 - Write your Story
Chapter 4 - Evaluate and Rewrite your Story

Now instead of reaching for 20 screenwriting books, I can reach for this one little booklet. It will continue to be a work in progress. As I learn or remember neat little tricks or techniques, they will be added to the booklet. With my booklet finished, at least the POW stages, I can start working on my screenplays again.

Check Out the Peek-a-Boo Task List

Its in the sidebar.

Click - You see it.
Click - You don't.

Another Update

My 101 Task list in the sidebar now has bullets. Thank you very much. I should have put "Learn a few html tricks" on my list somewhere. I could have marked that one off.

I started playing with the 101 Team Blog because I was pretty sure I was going to start a Family Blog and delete the 101 Team Blog, so if I screwed it up it wasn't a big loss.

I added Peekaboo comments that expand and collapse when you click on them. And a "New Comment" indicator that lets you know if new comments have been added since the last time you were on the site.

They worked so well I decide to add them to my blog. Then I created The Family Blog, Our Kitchen Table, and added them to it as well.

<s>Then I discovered one more trick. The "Make a New Post" link lets you add a new post right from the blog without logging on and going to the Post Editor first. I thought that was so cool, I added it to my blog and the family blog as well.</s> <s>THIS WAS A BAD IDEA! - Edited Feb. 24, 06</s> I'm trying it one more time. - Edited Feb. 26, 06

I also updated my links by adding all the new family members who have started blogs - Neal and Barbara, Sheri and Greg, and Annie, welcome aboard guys, and a link to the new family blog.

Whew! See, I have been busy. I just found a relatively productive way to keep from working on my screenplay... and walking ... and reading screenplays ... but wait I have managed to squeeze in four movies from my list (a fifth will be added today). I even did a plot analysis on one of those. And, I added another cocktail, a Ruby Red Cosmopolitan.

There, now I don't feel so bad.

Back from Memphis - #47 and #65 Done!

Memphis
Originally uploaded by carpediem-101.
6 Tasks Completed
95 To Go

Mom and I spent a week in Memphis and had a real good time. We went to Graceland, drove by the Pyramid, went to Beale Street and listened to the Rum Boogie Blues Band, ate way to much every night, and drank a little too. On the way home, we stopped in Branson and spent the night where we had more food and more drinks. All in all we had a great time.

I also completed two tasks while we were there.
#47 - Spend the day or evening listening to live music. Done!
#65 - Spend the night away from home. I Think I've Got It!

Ha! I think I figured out how to have my list in my sidebar without too much HTML trouble. I retyped my list into the template and kept it as simple as possible, no colors, no italics, nothing fancy. The fonts, colors, sizes etc, came from the template I chose, so that's all done for me.

I copied and pasted the "Previous" HTML and changed the word "Previous" to "My 101 Tasks" so that it looks like all the others.

(Note: Change all the brackets [] into arrows <>in the following. Blogger wants to read and apply the HTML, so I'm tying to trick Blogger into not reading it.)

Then, I just chose [h5](for heading 5) for my category headings.

They look like this: remember the brackets should be arrows
[h5]Food and Drinks[/h5]

This is what is looks like on the blog:

Food and Drinks

Then I put a [br](for break, as in line break) at the end of all the other lines. Without the [br] all the text gets bunched up together.

It looks like this:
74 Try 10 different coffees [br]
You don't need a [br] at the beginning. You also don't need a / slash in it even though its at the end.

Now when I complete a task on the list, all I have to do is put a [s]at the beginning of the line, and a [/s]at the end of the line (the "s" is for strike-through) and I'm done.

It looks like this:
[s]75 Make home-made pizza[/s]
Those little s's at the beginning and end will put a line through the tasks I've completed.

It looks like this on the blog:
<s>75 Make home-made pizza</s>

Not so bad.
I'm still going to keep my other list active for a while to make sure this is going to work and to make sure everyone can see it.

So, if you can see my list in the sidebar, please let me know.

Thanks

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://carpediem-101.blogspot.com/2006/02/by-george-i-think-ive-got-it.html' title='By George! I was so proud of figuring out how to get My List in a scrolly box, in the sidebar, only to find out that I was the only one able to see it. What a pain!

I figured out how to get my list in the side bar without the scolly bar, but I would have to get in the template and edit the HTML every time I want to change my list. No thanks. So I'm back to having my task list in a separate blog with just a link to it in the sidebar. Best I can do. I can't get the multiblog instructions to work correctly. It may be my server. First of all, My 101 Tasks list is now in the sidebar in a scrolly box. I wanted to add it without the box, but I couldn't get it to work so this is the next best thing. Cool, huh? Except for the ugly Blogger Navbar at the top.

Also, I added a web counter at the bottom. I've have 13 visitors since I added it yesterday. Shhh, most of those are me while I was on and off trying to figure out how to get my list in the sidebar, but we won't tell anybody.

Hope you like the changes.

Carpe Diem,
Jeri

#73 Done!

Whew hew!

3 Down
98 To Go

#73 Try 5 fruits I've never tried before
1- pummelo
2- mango
3- plantain
4- cactus pear or prickly pear
5- papaya

You can read about them on my Food and Drinks page.

Jeri

I Changed #86

#86 used to read:
Walk or run on the treadmill 3 days a week for two months.

Sounds easy, right? Yeah. I found it was easy to put off, also. I was trying to get my butt on the treadmill long before I started 101 in 1001.

Then, I was listening to the radio the other day and Vanessa Carlton's song "A Thousand Miles" came on. She sings, "'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles if I could just see you tonight." I heard that number, 1000, and thought, "Now that's doing something." and I was inspired. The idea of having a more daunting task ahead of me makes me feel I need to work on it sooner, and more diligently.

So now #86 reads:
Walk 1000 miles

1000 miles in 1001 (okay 983) days. I can do that. Now, I just need to clear a path to the treadmill.

Do I post this? Do I post this?
Damn! I posted it. The mission is to complete 101 tasks in 1001 days. It seemed like a simple idea, and by the number of 101ers listed on his web site, apparently contagious. I decided to try it for myself.

Just making the list was harder than I thought. My List is made up of things that I've wanted to do for a long time, things that I need to do or should do, and cool ideas I stole from other 101er's, and always subject to revision : )

I created this blog is a way to track my progress as I work through the tasks.

My Beginning Date: January 1, 2006.
My Ending Date: September 28, 2008.

Thanks goes out to Triplux for sharing the idea and to others 101ers for their inspiration.
